Gallery Walls Tips for a Perfect Mix

A client recently told me she was trying to create a gallery wall for over a year but had only gotten as far as taping up some squares. It just was too overwhelming to come up with a pleasing design. I understand! I listened to what she would like to see and provided the template below. Problem solved!

Choosing the Right Frames for Your Gallery Wall

Frames set the tone for your gallery wall. Mixing different shapes like oval, rectangular, and square frames adds visual interest and prevents the display from feeling too uniform or boring. Here’s how to approach frame selection:

Rectangular frames work well for photos and art pieces that have a traditional or modern look. They provide structure and are easy to arrange in grids or clusters.
Square frames add symmetry and balance. Use them to highlight smaller pieces or create a rhythm within the layout, particularly if you have a series of similar pieces.
Oval frames introduce softness and a vintage or classic feel. They break up the straight lines and add a unique touch.

When mixing these shapes, don’t be afraid to use different materials and colors. While one color (like all black) can be striking, you can create a more interesting look by using multiple colors and materials. I love adding antique gold to pretty much any other color frame. In a more "Ralph Lauren" space, chrome-colored silver adds a polished look.

Where to Find Quality Frames

Think of it as a treasure hunt. And don’t let perfect be the enemy of getting your first draft gallery on the wall. You can always swap in a more interesting frame later.

Old is New
Antique stores, thrift shops, and estate stores are all excellent places to find frames. Don't be concerned about color - I love using brass or black spray paint to recolor frames. Focus on the shape and size.
Discount stores
World Market and Ikea have some decent options. Sometimes the best frame buys in these places include the artwork. Just toss or reuse the art if you aren't using it in your gallery. Of course, Amazon is an alternative but it's hit or miss so be prepared for returns when the quality isn't up to par (always check if it is glass or plastic front). I just purchased this frame and it is higher quality with glass and quite nice.

Using Mats and Lighting to Enhance Your Display

Mats are a powerful tool to elevate your gallery wall. They create breathing space around the artwork or photo and add a layer of sophistication. It also allows for oversized frames to add more drama to your space.

Use mats with some pieces to highlight artwork or prints that benefit from extra space. Black, white or cream mats typically work best.
For photos or art that you want to feel more immediate and intimate, hang them without mats, allowing the image to reach the edge of the frame.

Photo lighting on top of your gallery is a perfect final touch. I personally like two lights over one long one (see the picture above). There are both wired and good wireless options available in a wide variety of colors and sizes.

Tips for Arranging Your Gallery Wall

Creating a balanced layout is key to a successful gallery wall. Here are some practical tips:

Lay your frames on the floor first to experiment with arrangements before hanging.
Start with the largest piece in the center or slightly off-center and build around it.
Keep consistent spacing between frames, usually 2 to 3 inches.
Use paper templates cut to the size of your frames and tape them to the wall to visualize the layout.
